Chapter Fourteen

Pearl

“IF YOU GUYS NEED TO talk, I can hang out in the bedroom,” I offered.

“No. We’ve talked.” Lincoln looked at me. “We’re leaving today.”

“We?” I asked.

“Yes. I’m taking you somewhere safe and then I’ll figure out what comes next.”

“She can stay here,” Trenton offered.

I frowned at both of them. “Again. You are doing it again.”

“What are we doing?” Lincoln asked.

“Don’t play dumb. You know exactly what you are doing. You are talking about me like I’m not here. Like I don’t have a say what happens to me.”

The doorbell rang and Lincoln lunged for me. I yelped as he pushed me behind him and down the hall.

“It’s the pizza,” Trenton said, and held up a hand. “Relax. Damn, you’ve been in the thick of shit way too long.”

“Look through the peephole before you answer,” Lincoln ordered.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m not an idiot.”

Lincoln kept me pressed against the wall while we waited for Trenton to confirm it was the pizza. That wasn’t enough for Lincoln. He didn’t let me pull away until the door was closed, locked and the pizza was on the table.

“Can I eat now?” I hissed.

“Yes.”

I shoved him in the back. “You know, you are setting women’s rights back about a hundred years.”

“You are welcome to vote,” he said with a laugh.

“But I can’t answer the door if the pizza man comes.”

“Exactly.”

I rolled my eyes. “Whatever.”

Instead of complaining and fighting, I grabbed a slice of pizza and sat down to eat the first truly hot meal I had in days. It tasted like heaven. Thankfully, the brothers ate instead of argued as well. It was a small relief.

“I should check my phone,” Lincoln said, after we finished off the pizza.

“Expecting a call?” Trenton asked.

“Regina?” I said.

He nodded. “Yes.”

“What are you going to say her?”

I sighed. “I’m going to play dumb. I want to know what she knows.”

“Can she trace your call?”

“Yes. I won’t stay on long.”

“And then what?” Trenton asked.

Lincoln looked at me. “Then we leave.”

“You don’t need to go,” his brother said. “I promise I’ll keep my mouth shut. Stay as long as you need to.”

“It isn’t safe. We can’t stay in any one place for long.”

“Where will you go?” Trenton asked.

Again, I felt like I was being left out of the conversation. “Yes, Lincoln, where will we go?”

“I haven’t decided. We need supplies. I’d feel better if we could get back into the mountains.”

I knew that was coming. “And then?” I asked.

“I’ll get the supplies you need,” Trenton offered. “Make a list.”

“That would be great,” Lincoln answered.

I sat at the table with Lincoln, adding my two cents to the list. It wasn’t a lot, but it was better than what we had at the moment. Trenton came out of his room, freshly showered and dressed.

“Here,” Lincoln said, handing him a couple hundred dollars.

“I’m not taking your money.”

“Trenton, take it.”

“No,” he replied, snatching the list and walking to the door. “I’ll be back in an hour, two tops.”

“Thanks,” Lincoln said, locking the door behind his brother.

“I’m going to shower,” I said.
